Before Night Falls
Frances from Clare, 12 Oct 2010
Film about the life of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas following the revolution. Mostly subtitled and IMO very confusing and overly obsessed with homosexuality.
I know this film got great reviews but honestly it almost sent me to sleep & by the end of it I didn't feel I knew anything about the man other than his pretty active sex life.
Not a film I would recommend but maybe that's just me.
Worth a try

Good movie, a little slow to start, but gets more interesting as the movie goes on. Not exactly blockbuster material, but definitely good if people are interested in foreign cultures, persecution, the arts etc. My husband who usually wouldn't be into those types of films even enjoyed it, so it's worth taking a chance on just to see something different.
Not exactly a classic

I'm not sure why I rented this movie in the first place. It looks at the revolution in Cuba from a personal freedom and specifically a sexual perspective. In general I found it pretty boring and failed to keep my interest. There are some nice scenes such as in the church and the prison but not much to keep you interested.
Great acting

Lovely acting and the film is very compelling. It is interesting and engaging but you really don’t get to know this man, you know all about him but you don’t get to know him. I would recommend this if you are interested in social justice, history and that time in Cuba
Tour de force

An extraordinary movie with a tremendous performance by Bardem and a really interesting story to boot. Really liked this one.
one small negative - I found the occasional voice-over difficult to understand
